TheSituationofMigrantWorkersBackgroundThroughout2002largenumbersofpeoplecontinuedtoleaveBurmatoseekworkabroad.ApproximatelytenpercentofBurma’spopulationmigratestoothercountries,accordingtoareportMigration,Needs,IssuesandResponsesintheGreaterMekongSubregion2002,bytheAsianMigrantCenter.PeopleleaveBurmaforanumberofreasons.Rampantinflation,adeterioratingeconomyandgenerallackofemploymentandeducationalopportunitiesarefactorsthatcausemanypeopletoemigrate.Inadditiontothesehardships,manypeoplelivinginruralareasareforcedtopayheavytaxestolocalofficialsandthemilitaryandtosellalargepercentageoftheircropstothegovernmentatbelow-marketprices.Forthesereasons,manyBurmeseviewtheirmigrationaslessofadecisionthananeconomicnecessity.Ethnicminoritypeoplelivingincivilwarzonesoftenhavenochoiceaboutemigrating,astheyareforcedtofleetheirhomestoavoidbrutalcampaignsofviolenceagainstthembytheBurmeseMilitary.Everyyearthousandsofpeoplefleeacrosstheborder,primarilyintoThailand,toescapethesehumanrightsviolationswhichincludemassforcedrelocation,arbitraryarrest,torture,rape,andextra-judicialkilling.SomeofthesepeopleareabletoseekasyluminrefugeecampsinThailandandBangladesh,howevermanyofthosefleeinghumanrightsviolationsarenotrecognizedasrefugeesbytheThaiandBangladeshiGovernments.Theseindividualsareleftwiththechoiceoftryingtoenterrefugeecampsillegallyorelsetryingtosurviveasmigrantworkers.MigrationfromBurmaisfacilitatedbythefactthat7ofBurma’s14StatesandDivisionsshareborderswithneighboringcountries.Inthewest,BurmabordersBangladeshandIndia,inthenorthandnortheastChina,andintheeastLaosandThailand.Ina1999reportbySavetheChildrenUK,SmallDreamsBeyondReach:TheLivesofMigrantChildrenandYouthAlongtheBordersofChina,Myanmar,andThailand,theauthorsnotethatinthepasttenyearsthelargestflowofmigrantsintheMekongregionhasbeenconcentratedalongthebordersofChina,BurmaandThailand,withBurmesepeoplemakingupthelargestpercentageofthepopulationmigrating.ThereportgoesontonotethatwhileChina,India,Bangladesh
